× Workshop: How to Handle Heightened Text with Iam Coulter

Do you feel lost with Shakespeare? Is your classical monologue causing you grief? Are Gilbert’s words feeling forced? SYNOPSIS: Iam will lead this class through how to find your comfort-zone with “Heightened Text” (anything from Shakespeare and other classical pieces, to modern stylized works). Our emphasis will be on how to make formal or unusual text your own, and finding connection with it personally. INSTRUCTOR BIO: Iam Coulter is a passionate teaching artist and Shakespeare enthusiast. She currently serves as the director of education, development and outreach for Quest Theatre, and was formerly the artistic producer of The Shakespeare Company in Calgary, Alberta. She is an actor, director, dance machine and clown. She teaches acting, voice and text and Shakespeare performance to a variety of students. Iam holds a BFA (Drama) from the University of Calgary and completed the conservatory program at Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Massachusetts where she returns as often as possible to continue her training. Iam has worked with Citadel Theatre, Shakespeare & Company, Theatre Calgary, Vertigo Mystery Theatre, Alberta Theatre Projects, Theatre Junction and The Shakespeare Company. Workshop participants should come prepared with a piece of heightened text that they would like to work with. It doesn't need to be long. 6-15 lines. It can be Shakespeare, poetry, anything classical. Even lyrics from a favourite song! Learn it by heart (memorize) prior to the workshop. The speech should not be from a non-human character but age & gender DO NOT need to match your own. What’s important is that you feel a personal connection to the piece, even if you can’t quite articulate what that connection is. BRING two hard copies (not handwritten) of your speech to the workshop.
