Mask Acting Workshop with Dean Bareham
Uncover fearless expression through Mask!
SYNOPSIS: Dean has been building, teaching, and performing with masks for over 30 years. He believes masks are a powerful transformative tool for the physical theatre actor and can be used by themselves and as an entrance way into many theatrical forms such as dance and clown. Through movement and improvisation exercises we will explore the Masked Body as a performance tool and provide an introduction into physical characterization. We will employ a technique called Body Mapping to create a physical vocabulary amongst the participants. We will use neutral mask as a way to enter the emotional state of the mask, and from there we will explore full face character masks, half masks, and some Commedia Dell Arte characters to get us into grand gestures and archetypical characters such as Trickster and King/Queen. We will conclude by incorporating the mythological elements of Balinese masks. The classes will be physical and begin with a warm-up, but we will also be audience for each other, so dress accordingly. This course is ideal for students, performers, or anyone interested in exploring alternative acting techniques. Perfect for the ambitious, the talented, and the fearless!
