PLAYing Shakespeare Workshop with Iam Coulter
PLEASE NOTE: START time CHANGED TO 1:00PM
Whether you are well 'versed' in Shakespeare or...not-so-mucheth - have no fear! Where there's a Will plus Iam, there's a You plus Way!
SYNOPSIS: This monologue workshop creates a safe and invigorating environment in which participants PLAY with techniques to become more confident and connected to their Shakespeare text. Whether you are well versed in Shakespeare or a relative newcomer, this workshop will expand your understanding, deepen your personal connection, activate your imagination and sharpen your skill set.
Individual text work will be inspired by the needs of each unique participant. From physical exercises embodying the structure of the verse, to learning how to turn self-doubt into a source of insight and strength, this workshop offers a variety of experiences certain to boost confidence in your Shakespeare monologue.
What to prepare: Participants should come prepared with a 8 -16 line selection (in verse) from a Shakespeare play. It must be in verse, not prose. If you are unsure whether it is verse or not you can email the speech to me and I will let you know! As soon as you've decided on a piece please copy and paste the monologue into the body of an email and send it to iamcoulter1@gmail.com.
Memorization: Please learn it by heart. Having your speech memorized will enhance the kind of play you will be able to enjoy during the workshop. That said, you will always have the option of assistance with your lines. There will be no judgement of any kind. There are many tools we can use to support you if you struggle with memorization, or if you have registered for the workshop at the last moment.
Choosing a section of text: It should NOT be from a non-human character (e.g. fairies, witches, ghosts), but age & gender don’t need match your own. It does not need to a role you would expect to be cast in - though it certainly can be. What’s important is that you feel a connection to the piece, even if you aren’t sure what that connection is, or why you feel it.
Please bring TWO hardcopies of the speech with you to class, if you do not have access to a printer, please email to tickets@morpheustheatre.ca BY March 24.
